Dear Colleague,

in the German Research Center of ABB, we are currently looking for a new colleague in the field of actuator technologies. Please find detailed information at:

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct applied research in the area of mechanisms and actuators for developing new actuation systems within the wide and versatile field of ABB’s products
  • Apply advanced mathematical modeling and simulation to conceptualize, design and verify novel fast-moving mechanisms and actuation systems, specifically, regarding the analysis of dynamical mechanical performance
  • Conduct experimental analysis & verification, including the design of test rigs, selection of sensors and data acquisition systems, defining and/or running the tests and analysis of measurement results to test and validate demonstrators together with a prototyping team
  • Lead R&D projects with cross-functional teams in close cooperation with ABB divisions, customers, and universities
  • Identify new trends through observation of market, competition, and university research
  • Generate intellectual property
  • Review recent developments and trends in own field, identify application areas of novel technologies within ABB products
  • Present research results within the ABB group and at scientific conferences/journals

Requirements:

  • PhD degree in mechanical or mechatronics engineering, physics, or related field is essential
  • Experience in mechanics research for industrial systems with a background in kinematics and dynamics (analysis as well as synthesis), modeling and simulation (multi body / structural mechanics / fatigue).
  • Demonstratable experience and knowledge in the field of computational multibody dynamics is a prerequisite, i.e., analytical understanding of related equation systems and advanced modeling skills in software tools (e.g., MSC ADAMS) is essential
  • Experience in structural mechanics and FEM simulation tools is considered a plus., e.g., ANSYS, ABAQUS, COMSOL.
  • Experience in practical implementation of mechanisms and actuators as well as strong practical laboratory skills are highly beneficial, i.e., experience in designing, commissioning, and running dedicated test setups followed by post processing
  • Research publications, conference contributions and services as well as experience in third-party funded project application would be considered a plus
  • Experience in concept design or mechanical design or manufacturing engineering is a plus.
  • Additional IT-skills will be considered a plus, e.g., 3D CAD (e.g. SolidWorks, Creo), MATLAB/Simulink or LabView.
  • High interest in exploring new fields of research and technology outside own field of expertise, paired with a collaborative, solution-oriented approach
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is essential; German language skills are beneficial but not a prerequisite
