Mission statement Teaching

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Leibniz Universität Hannover trains engineers for industry and research according to scientific standards. Academic teaching is based on the understanding of freedom of research and teaching and on the current state of research. The courses offered by the faculty impart fundamental knowledge that transcends subject boundaries and support the development of engineering competence, which also anchors the social responsibility of our graduates.

Bachelor's degree | Master's degree

In the consecutive education system of the faculty, the Bachelor's programme aims to build up a basic engineering competence. The Master's degree serves to deepen the subject and research-oriented knowledge, which can lead to a doctorate.

Shared responsibility 

Students and lecturers jointly assume responsibility for successful teaching and learning at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Lecturers meet students at eye level and supervise their scientific education. Students contribute independently to the success of their studies by working on courses, following up on them, participating in teaching evaluation for quality improvement and giving constructive feedback.

Innovation and actuality 

We enable our students to be innovative and creative. Our education takes into account developments in science and society and familiarizes students with these underlying ways of thinking and logics. The faculty encourages the development of innovative teaching and learning concepts. Students participate in these processes through the Academic Commission, the Student Council and appropriate committees.

Learning environment

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering works continuously to provide and improve an optimal teaching and learning environment. This includes spatial and examination planning, student support by the faculty administration, services provided by the faculty to the institutes as well as the creation of incentives and framework conditions for high-quality education.

Internationality

A study or doctorate at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is internationally attractive. Therefore the faculty maintains the necessary infrastructure. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering supports students, doctoral candidates and lecturers on their way abroad as well as guests during their stay at the faculty.

Diversity

Lecturers and students are versatile. They bring with them different backgrounds, previous experiences and individualities. We see this as a resource, opportunity and positive challenge. Teaching and learning is a process that can be measured by the diversity of the group and requires appreciation, commitment, willingness and openness from all participants. The freedom of science is based on the free democratic basic order, on tolerance and transparency. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is committed to openness towards the inclusion of all participants in the faculty, regardless of gender, nationality, religion, disability, age or sexual identity.

Scientific character

The teaching of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is research-oriented. Lecturers are also researchers and let their research findings flow into teaching. Students are enabled to learn and apply research methods by being involved in research projects. The principles of scientific work can be experienced in teaching. This includes striving for knowledge gain, critical questioning, dealing with uncertainty and protecting the intellectual property of others.

Competence development and quality assurance

Teaching and learning are geared to the desired holistic competence profile of the graduates. This is reflected in the competence profiles of individual modules within the curricula. These include both subject-specific and interdisciplinary competences. The concept of teaching, learning and testing at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering ensures that students can develop these competences step by step. The faculty is committed to a transparent system of quality assurance. All actors of the faculty are invited to participate in the discussion.
