What are the requirements for a successful application for Optical Technologies?
Step 1:
You need a valid language certificate in German or English of minimum level C1. More information on the accepted certificates can be found here.
Step 2:
Depending on whether you have studied Physics (or a similar subject) or Mechanical Engineering (or a similar subject) in your Bachelor's degree, there are certain requirements:a) Bachelor's degree (at least 6 semester / 180 ECTS points) in Mechanical Engineering or a similar previous degree programme with at least:
- 15 ECTS points in Mathematics
- 15 ECTS points in Technical Mechanics
- 27 ECTS points total in the fields of Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Design and Construction
- 08 ECTS points in Optics
OR
b) Bachelor's degree (at least 6 semester / 180 ECTS points) in Physics or a similar previous degree programme with at least:- 15 ECTS points in Mathematics
- 05 ECTS points in Technical Mechanics
- 45 ECTS points in Experimental Physics including Mathematical Methods in Physics (minimum of 15 ECTS points in Advanced Optics and Solid State Physics)
-
I have studied something other than Physics or Mechanical Engineering in my Bachelor's programme. Can I apply anyway?
Yes, you are welcome to apply. The subject should be similar to physics or mechanical engineering or optics in general. It is still important that you meet the requirements of language level and ECTS in certain subjects (see also the question: What are the requirements for a successful application?).
-
My language score in English proficiency is less than C1 (overall IELTS score < 7.0). However, my credit points meet the requirements. Will my application be considered?
If your application does not meet the language requirements of proficiency C1 (overall IELTS score less than 7.0), it will unfortunately not be considered.
-
My language proficiency certificate has expired. What can I do?
Your application will only be considered when all documents are complete and valid. A language proficiency certificate is usually valid for 2 years. If it has expired, your application cannot be considered. Please take another exam and apply again in the upcoming semester.
-
I already have a Master's degree. Will the required ECTS points be considered from Bachelor and Master together?
No. Since you are applying for a new Master's programme, only the ECTS points of your Bachelor's degree will be considered.
-
My Bachelors degree has less than 180 ECTS points / doesn’t show any ECTS points. Will my application be considered?
Your Bachelor degree should have at least 180 ECTS points. If your transcript shows less than 180 ECTS points, it cannot be considered.
Credit Hours (CH) or Credit Grades are not equivalent to ECTS points. In such cases, please send an officially certified document from your university along with your application, which lists a corresponding number of ECTS points for each subject or which contains an official conversion factor. Otherwise your application will unfortunately not be considered. -
I have not completed my Bachelor's degree yet. Can I apply for the Master's programme already?
Yes, you can apply even if you have not completed your Bachelor's degree yet. However, your Bachelor's transcript must show a minimum of 150 ECTS points. If you are admitted to the Master's programme, it is initially provisional and you must submit your Bachelor's degree certificate by the end of the 1st semester.
-
I have applied for Optical Technologies in the official application period. When will I receive a letter of admission or rejection?

The official letters of admission and rejection are usually sent out via e-mail by the Admissions Office by the end of August for winter semester and by the end of February for summer semester. Please be patient during this time. Requests for interim status update will not be fulfilled.
