As a rule, the course of study takes 6 semesters. After passing the Bachelor Thesis you will receive the degree Bachelor of Science.
What can you expect during your studies?
A special feature at the beginning of your studies is the practice-oriented Bachelor's project. You will work in a group on current research and practical problems of the faculty institutes. There are 13 projects to choose from, which cover the three areas of specialisation "Development and Design", "Energy and Process Engineering" and "Production Engineering". For example, you may be working on the development of an additional smartphone lens, the design of an electrically powered car or the production of individual components for a racing car. In this way, you will gain practical experience in the first semester, develop targeted solutions and implement them. At the same time, you will learn skills such as teamwork, project management and personal responsibility.
In the first semesters you will be taught basic knowledge in the fields of mathematics, metrology, computer science, mechanics, thermodynamics and materials science. Your curriculum includes corresponding lectures and exercises. In addition, you will have the opportunity to put your theoretical knowledge into practice in laboratories and internships. Tutorials and exercises help you to apply and deepen your knowledge. In the further course of your studies, you can choose two specialisation modules, thus defining a first specialisation. Specialist excursions to industrial companies and the teaching of key competencies complete the course offerings. In addition, you have the possibility to choose a module from the entire range of courses at Leibniz University in the Studium Generale. You are not limited to the engineering field here and can therefore look beyond your own nose. In the last semester you will write your bachelor thesis, which concludes your studies.

Internships
Preliminary internship
For the Bachelor's degree programme in Mechanical Engineering, a so-called pre-study internship must be completed. The eight-week pre-study internship is compulsory, but must be successfully completed before registering for the elective modules from the fifth semester onwards, i.e. you can also use the semester break for your eight-week internship. However, it makes sense to complete the internship before you start your studies in order to acquire a basic understanding of study contents and to prevent time bottlenecks within your studies. The areas of activity to be covered are laid down in the internship regulations.
Internship
The twelve-week specialised internship, on the other hand, can be completed in the Bachelor's programme or in a subsequent Master's programme. Those who decide to complete the internship only in the Master's programme choose in-depth elective modules instead.
Qualification targets
-
Tasks and requirements in mechanical engineering are ...
Mechanical engineering comprises the development, design, construction and implementation of technical products, processes and systems that function in a traceable, reliable and defined manner. The professional requirements consist of the analysis and synthesis of individual scientific and technical-functional aspects and their functional interplay. In addition to the optimization of established technologies, innovative and interdisciplinary solutions for complex problems must be developed.
-
The main qualification goals of the Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering are ...
- a sound understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals, their scientific basis and their mathematical modelling (technical mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, design, manufacturing processes, metrology, control engineering and so on)
- a general and theory-based understanding of technology as a purpose-oriented configuration of a functional system and its description with scientific methods - also interdisciplinary
- the understanding and application of engineering methods in the planning, design, layout, production, commissioning, testing and evaluation of mechanical engineering products and processes
- the application of standards of scientific work to structured questions of medium complexity
-
Graduates are able to ...
- explain basic technical relationships and principles and apply them to mechanical engineering problems in order to develop solutions for problems of medium complexity
- precisely describe the interaction of components in machines, machine systems and technical processes with the help of theoretical models
- handle common design tasks: to model functions, select materials, design machines and processes, dimension parts and components, prepare technical drawings, take into account manufacturing constraints
- carry out experiments and measurements for the purpose of testing and checking
- work independently on specialist projects and to design work processes in teams in a technically and communicatively goal-oriented manner
- independently develop disciplinary subject areas and to link them to application areas in an expert manner
Application and start of studies
Areas of activity
The Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering qualifies you to take up an engineering profession. Depending on your specialisation, you can work in large and medium-sized national and international companies that are active in the respective fields. The Bachelor's degree also qualifies you for further master's studies.
